Forget Africa’s Big 3, meet our Tiny 5 Safari Lodge

Africa may have its Big 3, but meet the Truffle Lodge Tiny 5

Everyone has heard about Africa’s Big 3. Let’s face it, it has been done to death!

Ordinary is overrated!

Instead delight in the Tiny 5 at Truffle Lodge – platypus, echidna, pademelon, possum and the elusive wombat.

The platypus can be seen at any time, but best spotting is morning, evening, or when overcast. The tent Platypus Point was named by the workers who saw platypus almost every day while they were building.

The echidna is an industrious chap, so you can see him at any time. We frequently see them near our entrance gate, and there is a very large one that digs for yummies up the far end of the property.

The possum and pademelon are nocturnal. There is a big spotlight torch in your luxury tent, so you can look for the reflection of their eyes. Spotlighting is a favourite after dinner activity – then a hot shower and into bed.

The wombat is much harder to see. They are quite private. Wombat burrows are along the river bank, usually amongst tree roots. Very early morning has proved to be the best time. One guest, quietly sitting near the river deck watching for platypus, sensed that there was something behind her. She sat very still, sipping her early morning cuppa, while the wombat foraged around her. She didn’t even take a photo. “I didn’t want to do anything that might frighten it off,” she said.
