EN ROUTE FROM AIRPORT

Reception at Truffle Lodge is from 3.00pm.

If your plane arrives early, here are some activities en route to Truffle Lodge that you might enjoy.

If you would like oysters or lunch at a quality restaurant, Barilla Bay Oysters is near the exit – exit right (4th exit) towards Sorell at the big roundabout just outside of– exit right (4th exit) towards Sorell at the big roundabout just outside of the Hobart airport.

The following route is the one that we suggest that you meander along to us. It is a bit longer but it is a lovely drive, through farmland, past wineries, a cheese factory and historic towns.

At the big roundabout outside the airport exit towards Cambridge (Kennedy Drive third exit, short commercial area) rather than towards Hobart (second exit).
At next roundabout continue through onto Cambridge Rd, then turn right onto Richmond Rd.

Frogmore Creek winery is just ahead on your right. A fairly big, commercial concern with a large restaurant.  The delightfully named Puddleduck winery in a little further on your left. A small, very personal ‘farm gate’ vineyard. A little further on the left is Wicked Cheese Company.

Continue on and there are acclaimed Pooley Wines in old sandstone property on your right. You are going to turn left just after Pooley wines, towards Tea Tree but you might like to drive a tiny bit further into Richmond, and town that time forgot (before it became a tourist Mecca!!). There is a famous pie shop there (The Richmond Bakery) if you fancy a really good old-style pie! There are also some quite good restaurants, coffee shops, and a superb antique shop (2 brothers married to 2 sisters who own best antique shop in our town!). There are the colonial gaol, barracks, bridge, church and lots of old buildings.

Turn off towards Tea Tree, and immediately left again, signed as route to Bonorong (there is a new by-pass road that goes straight ahead)
You will meander along country lanes, past the local (country) golf course, vineyards and sheep farms, alpacas, geese, cows etc.
(Zoo doo wildlife park on your right ??? )
At T- junction turn left towards Brighton

Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is on your left …. A delightful way to spend a few hours!

At the new big road complex, turn left onto highway towards Hobart & Glenorchy.
This will take you to bridge over Derwent at Bridgewater.

At Bridgewater, you can go up either side of the river.

If you want to go to New Norfolk

• go straight through the first roundabout, straight through the second roundabout (Golden Arches of Macca’s on your right!!)
• cross the Derwent over an old steel bridge (which used to open for large ships to go upriver), and then across the causeway built by convicts by hand. Lots of black swans, (although the cygnets are looking quite big now) and keep your eyes open for dolphins and seals on your right.
• on the OTHER side of the river, turn right towards New Norfolk (not left towards Hobart).

[OR If you have time (you will need several hours) and would like to check out MONA, turn LEFT at this point, and it is a few kilometres down the river, turn off on the left is well signed.]

About 2-3 km up-river, Stefano Lubiana winery on your left – probably the most famous winemaker in Tassie. Stefano’s has New Barrel rooms and Osteria (tasty rustic Italian inspired food). This is a family business.
Just past Stefano, on your left, is Derwent Estate, another highly acclaimed vineyard (same soil as Stefano’s). Another family run concern with a delightful converted workers cottage cellar door with platters.

About 10 minutes on (you will pass premium paper manufacturer on right along the way) you come to New Norfolk.

At New Norfolk:

• take the second exit at the first roundabout, drive a few blocks to The Bush Inn, Australia’s oldest continuously operating pub.
• OR take the first exit at the first roundabout and 2 blocks to the fabulous Drill Hall Emporium of exquisite antiques, opposite the park [also check out their sister stores Miss Arthur’s Homewares and the delightful tiny treasure, Flywheel]
• the Agrarian Kitchen Eatery is a few blocks further on past The Drill Hall [ they will point you in the right direction] if you would like to have lunch at one of Australia’s most acclaimed restaurants.

Two blocks after TheBush, turn right at the next roundabout, then turn left on the other side of the bridge and continue up to Truffle Lodge (another 10-15 mins).
