The best Aurora Australis Tasmania Experience may be at the luxurious Truffle Lodge
I was talking to my brother this week. He said that the Aurora Borealis was high on his bucket list.
I suggested that the Aurora Australis was just as good, and far more accessible. You could have knocked me over with a feather when he asked, “What’s that?”
My brother is not an ignorant man. I find it difficult to understand why this outstanding natural phenomena is so little known in Australia. Everyone knows about the Northern Lights, but so few know of the Southern counterpart.
It is a major undertaking for Australians to get to see the Northern Lights. I know because I have done it several times. One has to travel to Europe or Canada … and then, just keep going. The Lights are best seen in locations that are far removed from the ambient lights of settlement. That is not always easy in the more populated areas.
Tasmania is somewhat different. Look south from almost anywhere in southern Tasmania, and you have nothing ahead of you save the vast expanses of the Great Southern Ocean. Not much ambient light there.
At Truffle Lodge, we are well removed from Hobart, and our skies are awash with starlight all year round. We get some wonderful Aurora Australis sightings here. Last year our guests were treated to an amazing sky show from the decks of The Lodge. One of our staff had the presence of mind to run up the hill to snap this shot.
One of the best times to see the Aurora Australis in Tasmania is Autumn.
